Proposal: Trade Agreements in Brittania

Postby Castor Augustus Servo on Sat Jun 20, 2009 6:55 pm

Cicero Julianus brother of Fortunas Julianus stood in the Senate for the first time since leaving for Hispania...

"Esteemed members of the senate, I stand before you after a long absence, and humbly ask that you consider my proposal" Sweating slightly and nervous starting to kick in.

"I ask the Senate to consider sending out trade delegations to Brittannia to in the long run gain a healthy trading partnerships with the tribes that are there. Brittannia has a lot to offer Rome, in terms of tradeable goods, they copper, tin, gold, silver, animal hides as well as potential for expansion of Roman ideas and expansion of Roman civilisation. These goods will help sustain the economies of Gaul and will help us gain potential trade routes in the Saxonnes region as well."

"I ask the Senate consider me to lead this expedition to Brittannia, to bring the added wealth that Rome will desperately need. I ask that the Senate consider my proposal."

Cicero Julianus sat down, sweating profusely was glad that it was over but it was essential for him to get back to normal ways. His heart pounding and hand shaking, the Senatar Marcus Fallentus placed his hand on his shoulder and calmed him.

Proconsular Legate Valens Julianus speaks;

"As I am moving north to take command of that region, I will see that security is provided for such a expedition. As well map makers should be sent and representatives should re-establish contact with friendly tribes for when the Roman legions return to that region one day."

Senator Claudius Sextus Vitellius spoke, somberly.

"Many times already we have been to Britannia. We have allied with the Durotriges, and helped them gain supiority. It was started by a Proconsul of Gaul working on his own volition. Then a Proconsular Legate stepped in and aided the enemy of the Durotriges, the Regnenses, and then Rome's fruitful allies were beaten down. Then, we tried again to establish ties- only then, another Proconsular Legate found himself bedding the Queen of yet another tribe, and with the help of usurperous Gothic legions elevated her tribe to dominant status- and you know who that Queen was? Verctissa of the Trinovantes, who stood by Decius Lucius Verus and encouraged his secession of the North from Rome."

Sextus huffed, and looked visibly bothered. "I remember the lessons learned from trying to go in there peacebly and set up a dominant tribe. Then Emperor's got complacent about the North and Proconsular Legates took matters into their own hands. I even admit that two of my own kinsmen had large roles to play in what led to the Britains aiding the secession of the septentionalis... Sarius Lepidus Vitellius, my own uncle, and his son Lepidus Tetricus Vitellius. Knowing how my own kin have betrayed the empire, I know more than any here how dangerous it is to deal with those heathens... so," Sextus paused briefly, "I will not support any measure of dealing with Britannia that doesn't entail many legions and a goal of securing for ROME as much land as can be taken without niceties or bargains. That dark isle has cost this empire too much to try things nicely once again."

Cicero Julianus stood to retort...

"My friend, there are many tribes in not forsaken isle but if you require us to send legions we will intially need allies to support our landings. But that is not the purpose of the proposal, the purpose of the proposal is to bring wealth to Rome without bloodshed. Surely that is beneficial to everyone. Plus we can show these Britons the advantages of alligning themselves with Rome.
